Relax, Unplug & Explore: Why Hornsea Is a Hidden Gem for Yorkshire Coast Caravan Holidays

The Yorkshire Coast has long been a popular and much-admired short-break destination. Indeed, data released during the 2010s indicated that greater numbers of British holidaymakers visited the coast of North Yorkshire than any other part of the country outside of London.

It isn’t too difficult to understand the reasons for this enduring appeal. Few parts of the UK offer such a captivating mix of seaside charm, welcoming sandy beaches, picturesque coastal scenery, affordable holiday accommodation, and an abundance of things to see and do.

Hornsea Might Not Be the Most Obvious Yorkshire Coast Resort

If you were challenged to name some popular Yorkshire Coast resorts, you would probably be immediately put in mind of the likes of Scarborough, Whitby, Filey, and Bridlington.

A place that you might not think of at first, is humble old Hornsea. That may seem understandable enough, given the Holderness coast town’s population of only around 8,500 people. However, it is also a settlement that packs a considerable punch for holidaymakers, relative to its size.

Here, then, are a few of the reasons why, when it comes to potential focal points for Yorkshire Coast caravan holidays, Hornsea has true “hidden gem” status.

  • Hornsea Offers a Peaceful Coastal Retreat

Where other Yorkshire Coast resorts sometimes risk feeling too crowded and “touristic”, Hornsea presents a calming and serene atmosphere.

It is a place where visitors can enjoy so many of the finest things about seaside towns in “God’s Own County”, such as stunning sea views and a charming promenade, while still being afforded the space and time to think.

A site within the town that embodies this vibe, is Hornsea Leisure Park. This park presents various options for comfortable short-term holiday accommodation, as well as holiday homes for sale. However, it skips the noisy entertainment that characterises certain other resorts along the Yorkshire Coast.

With its immaculately kept grounds, ponds, and trails, this holiday park presents a calmness that sums up so much of what people love about Hornsea. It helps that the park is a short walk away from Hornsea Beach, with its golden sand and gently lapping waves.

  • Hornsea Is an Excellent Location for A ‘Digital Detox’

You have probably come across the term “digital detox” increasingly often in recent years, as growing numbers of people have sought to find ways to consciously disconnect from their phones, laptops, and other screen-based devices.

Alas, in our present era in which even buses, coaches, and trains tend to offer onboard Wi-Fi, achieving such disconnection can be challenging. This helps to explain why so many people are now on the lookout for Yorkshire Coast caravan holidays that make it easy to focus on “real-world” experiences away from the digital or online world.

Hornsea certainly scores highly in this regard. It is a great place to immerse oneself in nature and the great outdoors, as demonstrated by such nearby attractions as Hornsea Mere, Bugtopia Hornsea Zoo, and Honeysuckle Farm.

Putting aside the nature aspect, offline stimulations can also be enjoyed at the factory outlet shopping village known as Hornsea Village (formerly Hornsea Freeport), as well as at Wassand Hall. The latter is a large Regency house overlooking Hornsea Mere, and which also presents enjoyable walled gardens and walks around the estate.

We should quickly note that Wassand Hall, as a property that remains a family home, isn’t open to the public every day. So, ahead of your intended visit, we would urge you to check www.wassand.co.uk for the latest information.

  • Hornsea Lends Itself to Exploration of The Wider Region

With Hornsea itself being so compact, but still well-connected to nearby areas, it can be regarded as a convenient gateway to the many charms and inspirations of broader Yorkshire.

The town is only an approximately 15-mile drive from Bridlington, for example, with its beaches, arcades, and lively nightlife. Or for further immersion in nature, you might like the idea of taking the 21-mile journey (about 45 minutes by car) to RSPB Bempton Cliffs to spot seabirds.

You’ll only even need to drive for roughly an hour to the west from Hornsea before you get to the city of York. So, if you haven’t yet experienced the historic York Minster and the Shambles (a picturesque, narrow street with overhanging timber-framed buildings), your Yorkshire Coast caravan holidays in or near Hornsea could give the perfect opening to do so.

There’s No Need to Keep Overlooking Hornsea as a Holiday Destination

All these aforementioned elements, taken together, illustrate how Hornsea can be considered a true “hidden gem” among places to stay for a short break.

Whether the visitor wishes to relax, unplug, explore, or all three, this East Riding of Yorkshire resort will present them with a lot of opportunities to do precisely that, for a reasonable price.
